The New York Yankees but Through the Lens of an AI

Background

For my first assignment I was tasked with creating a sports poster for a professional sports team. Sticking with the theme of AIs in DS106 I decided to use an AI to generate this poster. I asked the AI to produce a sports poster of the Yankees using a modern theme with nature elements. I felt a modern theme would really grab audience’s attention given the futuristic looks of the poster. I threw in the nature theme as a twist. If you look at sports poster in today’s society there is a lack of a nature elements. I’m not saying nature themed sports posters don’t exist, but I felt including this would draw more attention due to the uncommon presence of it.

Why the Yankees?

I chose the New York Yankees for my example for a couple reasons. First reason is this is my favorite sports team of all time. I grew up watching some of the greatest players to ever play for the Yankees. For example, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, and countless more. Another reason I chose the Yankees was how iconic they are. All over the world people have heard of the New York Yankees. This poster came out great. It gives a futuristic vibe with hints of nature elements, something different from a boring generic poster that will turn heads and grab the audience’s attention.

Hey Andrew! Despite the fact that I am a Phillies fan and not a Yankees fan, I think the work you did is excellent. Looking at and analyzing the picture of Yankee Stadium was really enjoyable for me. While I acknowledge that most sports graphics do not feature nature, what ultimately inspired you to create something like it? As you pointed out, the image of Yankee Stadium does have a futuristic feel to it. Continue the excellent work!

This is a really interpretation of the assignment and I did something similar with the Bengals football team. I asked the AI bot to generate me pictures of the stadium with specific and less specific instructions. I found that the more instructions I gave it, the less it looked like what I wanted it to look like. It was interesting to see what kind of results you got when compared to mine.

    1. I also noticed when using the AI to generate my poster, that the more specific I was with the prompt the outcome wasn’t what I was looking for. It is interesting to see this given you would think the more specific you are the more details would align with what you’re looking for.

Hi Andrew! Even though I support the Phillies and am not a fan of the Yankees, I think you did a great job on this. The image of Yankee Stadium is my personal favorite. While I acknowledge that most sports graphics do not feature nature, what ultimately inspired you to create something like it? As you pointed out, the image of Yankee Stadium does have a futuristic feel to it. Continue the fantastic job!

  4. As a Yanks fan (demoralized after last season), I enjoyed your AI explorations here. That AI has trouble with words in its image maker is something that always strikes me as odd (but I suspect it not a glitch but a design element — to avoid users making inappropriate things in AI images). Your first image hints that Ye might be a Yankees fan.

    1. Last season was definitely a rough one. I had a feeling the restriction had to do something with making sure nothing inappropriate was generated.

    2. The Ye York stood out to me too. I wondered if he was running for mayor or something.

      1. I agree, at first glance when the AI generator produced this image, I wasn’t sure why it put Ye York instead of just New York. I’m curious about the meaning of Ye York if it even has one or if it is just made up.

  5. I wonder if part of the distortion may be driven by brand or copyright limitations built into the image generator. I had a similar issue when trying to create a movie poster for Videodrome, it would not actually use the title Videodrome, but variationas like videdrone or videordone, making me thinking that there may be a no fly list for certain known titles/brands already
